Kashir

Seren continued to study the large, ancient book, carefully turning the brittle pages. As she did, Kashir got restless like he usually did when he felt particularly useless. He couldn’t translate the ancient words and symbols like Seren, even though at times, it felt like she was doing so at a snail’s pace. He fidgeted in his chair, which caused Seren to look up several times and scowl.

“You know, your impatience is what has gotten you into trouble so many times in the past,” she pointed out. “You do realize it’s okay to just sit still?”

Kashir scoffed. “It’s not impatience I’m feeling, it’s . . . lack of purpose. I hate just sitting around while everyone has a job to do, and I don’t.

Seren’s annoyance softened. She knew how much that bothered him. “Why don’t you make us some tea then?” she suggested.

Kashir rolled his eyes. “Oh yes, you sit here and work on translating these ancient tomes, and I’ll fetch us some hot tea. One of these days, when they write about us and put our names and stories in books such as these, you’ll have an entire chapter devoted to your discoveries, and I’ll just be a side note—the boy who fetched the tea.”

“You’re so dramatic.” Seren laughed. “Besides, there’ll be at least a whole page about the dragon prince. Of course, it will probably be after my entire chapter, but you know, at least you’ll make it into the book.” Seren winked at him, and that made Kashir laugh.

“Alright.” He chuckled as he stood. “I’m going to go find my brother and tell him what little we know. And maybe, just maybe, I’ll bring you back some tea.”

Kashir ran down the stairs from the library, excited to tell Brajinn of their findings and to feel useful again.

The crux of the matter was that Brajinn didn’t keep a set schedule like Kashir did. Between hunting and training and strategizing with his men or mingling with ladies of the court, the King rarely ever followed the same set of steps twice. But as his younger brother, Kashir knew his favorite places and checked them first.

Except he didn’t find him anywhere.

He wouldn’t still be in his bedroom, would he? He’d learned from experience not to wander into his brother’s room when Brajinn wasn’t expecting him.

Kashir’s mind was filled to the brim with ideas. Ideas he wanted so desperately to share with his brother, especially after the moment they had had the night before. His brother toasting his victory like he was a decorated soldier, holding his hand up for all the nobles to see. Surely now Brajinn would finally hear him out, even if some of his inventions or ideas seemed a little out there.

Kashir had realized that since he was so good with the dragon they already had, if she could possibly lead them back to the other dragons, they could rebuild the species. And upon rebuilding the species, bring the kingdom back to the days of yore, slaying enemies on dragonback.
